The Diagnostic Value of the Vaginal Smear for the Ruuptured Membranes

Abstract
The vaginal smears were obtained, to evaluate the ruptured membranes from 222 pregnant women who were admitted in to the Ewha Woman¢¥s University. Hospital, Seoul, Korea in 1962.
Several diagnostic methods were studied on the same patients with following satisfactory, findings.
1. The vaginal smear - principally similar to the Fern test showed positive (crystal present) in 93.6 of cases with ruptured membranes and negative(crystal absent) in 95.12%of cases with intact membranes.
2. The phenol red test using 0.01 % sol. of P: S. P. as indicator showed positive (change to pink or red) in 95.5 % of cases with ruptured membranes and negative (no changes in color) in 82.9% of rises with .intact membranes. The Nitrazine test were the same as phenol red test in the results.
3. Both the vaginal smear and phenol red test were simple. and highly accurate in non-bleeding cases with ruptured. membrane, and is recommended for use in the office, outpatient clinic, and delivery suits.
Vaginal smears positive in 90.3-93.6%.
Phenol red test 91.7-95.5
Nitrazine test 91.7-95.5%
4. In bleeding (slight) gravidas, only the vaginal smear was reliable with 841-0 of accuracy, and the others; phenol red or Nitrazine test were, not l ecause it¢¥s high false positive in 48% and 52 of cases with intact membranes respectively.
